Mother’s Day songs and their meaning

In this section, we remember iconic songs that shaped generations and discover their significance, meaning and symbolism.

Mother’s Day won’t be the same without the emotional songs accompanying that special day.  While most of the Western World celebrates this day on the second Sunday of May, playlists fill up with songs every year trying to capture something almost impossible to define: the quiet strength, patience, and unconditional love that mothers embody.

Let’s go through some of the most popular songs that echo every year.

Topping the list is “A Song for Mama – Boyz II Men”, a classic tribute often used for Mother’s Day full of emotions and touching lyrics, then comes “Dear Mama” by Tupac Shakur which talks about struggle, gratitude and respect.

“The Best Day” by Taylor Swift is a nostalgic, soft reflection on childhood and a mother’s love, while as “Mama” by Spice Girls remains a catchy song about appreciating your mum as you grow up.

Two other songs are not exclusively Mother’s Day songs but carry a deep emotional feeling and are usually played on this occasion “Supermarket Flowers” by Ed Sheeran and “Because you loved me” by Celine Dion.

In French, few songs capture the emotional depth of motherhood as powerfully as La mamma by Charles Aznavour, one of the ambassadors of the French song internationally, and Les yeux de la mama by Kendji Girac.

Aznavour’s classic carries a profound sense of family, memory, and loss, portraying the mother figure as the emotional center holding generations together.

In contrast, Kendji Girac’s song that I used in Mother’s Day reel, offers a softer yet equally moving tribute, celebrating a mother’s unconditional love through warmth and admiration.

The song is less about describing a person’s eyes and more about exploring what a mother represents: love that is steady, formative, and remembered long after childhood ends.

What ties all these songs together isn’t just the theme, it’s the sense of connection turned into expression. Whether through gratitude, storytelling, or even regret, these tracks transform love into something you can hear and feel.

So, this Mother’s Day, whether you’re making a playlist or just playing one song on repeat, remember: the best picks are the ones that sound like your story!
