The Mediterranean beauty approach to wellness
In the Mediterranean, beauty has never been just about appearance, it is a lifestyle rooted in nature, nourishment, and balance. From olive oil treatments to sun-conscious skincare, the Mediterranean beauty routine emphasizes mindful rituals that nurture both skin and wellbeing.
In Cyprus beauty traditions blend natural ingredients, simple routines, and a philosophy of caring for both body and spirit. Many people today are rediscovering beauty as an act of self-love rather than perfection.
What is this philosophy?
Inside a beauty salon in Cyprus
Mediterranean beauty routines are not built around complicated steps or expensive products. Instead, they follow a few timeless principles:
Natural ingredients: For centuries, people across Cyprus have relied on simple ingredients from nature. One of the most cherished is olive oil, known for its deeply moisturizing and antioxidant properties. It has traditionally been used for skin hydration, hair nourishment, and gentle cleansing. Other natural elements such as honey, yogurt, and herbal extracts also play an important role in traditional skincare.
Sun awareness and protection: Life in the Mediterranean revolves around the sun. While sunlight is energizing, protecting the skin is essential. Daily sunscreen, hats, and hydration are important steps in maintaining healthy skin throughout the year.
Beauty from within: The famous Mediterranean diet, rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, olive oil, fish, and nuts, is often considered one of the healthiest diets in the world. Many wellness experts believe that this way of eating contributes to strong hair, glowing skin, and overall vitality.
Simplicity and consistency: Rather than complicated routines, Mediterranean skincare usually focuses on a few key steps: cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting the skin. The philosophy is simple; consistency matters more than complexity.
The daily ritual
My interview with Cypriot beautician Andri Gregoriou
To see how these traditions continue, I spoke with the Cypriot board-certified beautician Andri Gregoriou who has worked in the beauty industry for more than twenty years.
Andri explained that the simplest daily routine for skincare consists of gentle cleansing to refresh the skin, hydration, few minutes of facial massage to stimulate circulation, and most important of all is the sunscreen in an island that enjoys over 300 days of sunshine annually, shaping its vibrant outdoor lifestyle.
The idea is not just to improve the skin, but to create a daily practice of self-care, confidence, and emotional wellbeing.
I met Andri at her beauty salon “Exclusive beauty by Andri” and asked her about the Mediterranean beauty routine. She said “the Mediterranean approach is about healthy skin rather than trying to change how you look. It is an idea connected to self-love and confidence”.
She added that “the most important step after cleansing and hydrating, is wearing sunscreen regularly even in winter” saying that “many people underestimate sun protection. Because we live on an island, the sun is strong almost all year”.
Ideally, she recommends SPF 30 in winter and SPF 50 sunscreens saying that this protection “should include the neck and the hands as part of the anti-aging ritual”.
As for the night routine, she also favors cleansing followed by hydrating using a Retinol based cream as it is widely recommended for anti-aging, finishing up with vitamin C serum for glow.
Norma and Andri exploring the products
For the salon treatments, Andri opts for microneedling as the injuries sustained through this procedure promote skin renewal. She says “this is a minimally invasive skincare treatment that stimulates collagen production, helping improve skin texture, reduce scars and fine lines, and promote natural skin renewal”.
Self-care
I asked Andri about the best beauty advice she can give. She believes in “taking care of your skin every day as well as taking care of yourself”.
She adds that “stress, diet, and sleep affect your skin more than people realize”.

As for her top beauty tip, Andri concludes that “the key is consistency. A simple routine done every day is much more effective than expensive treatments done occasionally.”
Traditional remedies occupy also a big part of the Mediterranean beauty routine as some people still use olive oil masks for face or hair, as it is available all year round in Cyprus. Yogurt and avocado face masks are also popular among traditions inherited from mothers and grandmothers.
Final message
Ultimately, Mediterranean beauty is not about quick fixes.
In a world of ever-changing beauty trends, the Mediterranean philosophy offers something timeless: the belief that caring for yourself is not a luxury, it is a daily ritual worth celebrating.
Et voilà! The Mediterranean routine reminds us that sometimes the most powerful secrets are also the simplest!
Five facts about beauty routine in the Mediterranean:
Beauty is connected to lifestyle and Mediterranean culture emphasizing outdoor living, physical activity, social connection and balanced healthy nutrition; all these factors contribute to wellbeing and healthy looking-skin.
Sea minerals play a role in skincare, as living close to the sea means many Mediterranean beauty traditions incorporate saltwater, sea minerals, and seaweed, which are believed to detoxify and rejuvenate the skin.
Sunscreen prevents aging because daily SPF use protects against UV damage and prevents premature aging reducing also the risk of skin cancer. UVA rays are primarily responsible for wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.
Sleep affects skin quality because during sleep, the skin repairs itself. Poor sleep can lead to dark circles, puffiness, and a dull complexion.
Gentle exfoliation removes dead skin cells, improves texture, promotes renewal and allows other skincare products to penetrate more effectively
